Periwinkle Blue

We saw Psycho last week at the theater down the street and there was a line in the movie that I got caught on for a second. I made a mental note to check later as I immediately wondered if another movie had purposely used a reference to that.

Of course, as soon as we got out of the theater all I could remember was that I had made a mental note, not what the note actually was.

So tonight, out of the blue, Michelle mentions from across the room that the background on my WordPress dashboard looks blue. After some back and forth about it being grey, she says that it looks sky blue or periwinkle blue.

Bam! The mention of periwinkle blue reminded me immediately that I was supposed to remember something.

In Psycho, the sheriff’s wife, Eliza says:

I helped Norman pick out the dress she was buried in. Periwinkle blue.

And in Snatch, Brad Pitt’s character, Mickey, says:

Right. And she’s terrible partial to the periwinkle blue, boys. Have I made myself clear, lads?

While watching Psycho, I wanted to know if Guy Ritchie tossed that in there on purpose or if it was totally coincidental. It could go either way, but there’s at least one person that agreed with me enough to write up a trivia blurb on IMDB:

When Mickey “wins” a new trailer van for his mother from Turkish, he specifically picks out “periwinkle blue” as the color. In Psycho, we are told that Norman Bates helped to pick out a “periwinkle blue” dress for his dead mother. Mickey, just like Norman, is also responsible (albeit indirectly) for his own mother’s death.

My mind can now rest. And I should watch Snatch again.
