My Own Private Idaho (1991)

We watched My Own Private Idaho for the first time last night now that I’m on the beginnings of a Gus Van Sant kick.

A very melancholic look at life on the streets of Portland, through the eyes of two ‘hustlers’, Mike and Scott. I was impressed by the eloquent dialog and interaction between characters and I may now read Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2 and Henry V as a result. It’s possible that this was the perfect role for Keanu Reeves, who I’ve hardly liked in anything before. And it only adds to the sadness of River Phoenix’s story.
