A Hedge Against Fury

From Updike’s Rabbit Redux, as Rabbit adjusts to a bar in which he is entirely out of his element:

The presence of any game reassures Rabbit. Where any game is being played a hedge exists against fury.

I haven’t exactly figured out how much that means yet, but it sounds good.
